Zeros's Parties

Since the blog hasn't been updated for a while, you haven't gotten to hear about our past few zero's parties. In October, we had a Halloween party. But we also had a bubble party where we all got to blow bubbles and chew bubble gum. In November, We had a movie/pajama party. We all got to wear our pajamas to school and bring snacks and treats. The movie we watched was a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It was really fun! Last month we got to play games and finish the movie we had been watching, which was, Where the Red Fern Grows. We are happy to have our zero's parties! We hope everyone can make it to the next zero's party.

Book Report

For our book report this month we have to read a 100 page or above biography. The book report is going to be designed like a baseball card. On the front you have to include a picture of the person you did your biography on,the title of the book, the author of the book, and your name. On the back of your book report you have to include the statistics(date of birth,birthplace,death,etc.). You also have to include on the back of your book report, a brief summary of the person's life(highlights),and the reason why this person should be remembered. Make sure you try your best and make it the best it can be. Good luck!

october news

Yea, we finished our IOWA testing! It always feels good to get that out of the way.
We are also finishing up our math chapter on fractions. Parents, remind your students that to add or subtract fractions you first have to get a common denominator. Our fraction test will be on Monday.
We have also just finished our class book, Maniac Magee, it had a lot of great lessons in it and we had some wonderful class discussions. We will be starting reading groups next week.
This month for rotations we have me teaching science-physical matter, Mrs. Bringhurst teaching projects, Mrs. Sparks and Miss Gleicher teaching writing, and Mrs. Patton and Mrs. Skeem teaching social studies; they will be talking about our United States constitution and government.

The storytelling competition is coming up at the end of the month, so if you're interested I need your sign-up sheet. I know we are all also looking forward to fall break on Oc. 16 and 17.

Our zeroes party for this month will be our Halloween party on October 31. Any student that gets a white card in October will be missing this party; unfortunately, there are already 2 students that won't be able to attend. It's is importantant that everyone stays caught up on their work.

You can tell from these amazing pictures of Trevor doing the "shake your booty" relay, and Connor doing the- I'm not quite sure what he's doing-that the zeroes party are full of fun. We want everyone to get to attend!

MULTIPLICATION

Happy Birthday to Connor this past week and Mason this week!!

This past week in math we've been working on factoring and long division. Many of the students were struggling so I decided to have them take a multiplication test to make sure everyone knows their times tables. Congratulations to Kambrie, Camrie, and Hannah-They were the only students in the class that got 100% Way to go!

Hopefully the rest of you will keep practicing, we expect you to know all of your times tables through 12's in fifth grade! We will be having our test on Tuesday.

We will be reviewing vocabulary this week, so there will be no new words; But expect spelling as usual. It's always sent home on Monday, test on Friday. The base spelling words are: awesome, caught, caution, applaud, audio, unlawful, fauna, authority, bought, caulk, staunch, thoughtful. Remember, these are the base words. Your child will have a yellow, handwritten list of their personal words.

School picture day is coming up on September 18th, and don't forget about the book report that is due on September 26th. If you lost your orange paper for the book report just click on Mrs. Spark's class blog and she has a picture of it.

Week of September 1st-5th

I hope you enjoyed having Monday off, but now it's back to work! We had an excellent week last week, I'm glad most of the class is finally figuring out what's expected in 5th grade. I think it was a little shock for some of you, but now I'm pretty sure that you've got it. I love days when everyone has their homework done and everyone remembers to bring back all of their books and supplies. I hope you enjoyed the zero's party and that you're willing to work hard for the next one. Those of you that were in study hall missed out on some fun; but, hopefully you'll make it to the next one. It just takes a little bit of organization and responsibility and we could have the whole class go to the September party, that would be great!

Congratulations to our 100% students on spelling and vocabulary 2 weeks ago! This was our homophone test. They were: Camrie, Dylan, Trey, Sunny, Jason, Connor, Erin, and Kambrie! Thank you for putting in study time at home and caring enough about school to want to do well. We didn't do as well on spelling last week, I think some of you may have forgotten to study; but, we do still have some 100%, they are: Connor, Andrew, Chester, Courtlynn, and Camrie. Way to go!! We do have vocabulary words this week, they are: candid, desperate, frustrated, honorable , ill-informed, odious, optimistic, shrewd, solemn, and well-informed. Plan on the list going home on Tuesday, and the test on Friday. Also plan on studying a little each night. We will not have spelling this week because it is a short week.

Our first math test was also last week. We took our pretest and our class average was only 5/10. We set a class goal to have our posttest average be 8/10, but just fell short. We did improve 2 points to 7/10. I was disappointed at the amount of students that took the time to study at home. I told everyone some questions that were going to be on the test, and what they needed to learn from our math journals, but not very many took advantage of that. I think as a class we could have done better. We did have 3 students that scored A's on this test, they were: Connor, Trey, and Sunny. Congratulations to the three of you, I notice that you were on the 100% spelling list too, you worked hard and it paid off. Way to go! Our next math test is Friday, let's do even better!

Keep getting your homework in on time, but now let's focus on getting the answers right too. Be sure to read the directions and follow ALL of them. Don't foget to put your name on your paper either!
